Cloud Computing Security Issues and Challenges By @GiladPN | @CloudExpo [#Cloud]

The US Federal Communications Commission has recently reported that "theft of digital information has become the most commonly reported fraud, surpassing physical theft." Businesses can do a lot to protect themselves. The FCC issued a Tip Sheet for small businesses to promote employee security training, firewalls, securing of WiFis, and more. But for business operating in (or migrating to) cloud environments; data security, cloud computing security issues, and challenges take on  new meanings and require new strategies. Security in the Cloud: Unique Challenges In the cloud, data security poses new risks and challenges. We are no longer concerned just with burglars breaking into our offices to steal computers, but rather with the data belonging to complete systems deployed to the cloud. When using public cloud infrastructure like that of AWS, VMware, Microsoft Azure... (more)

GridGain Claims It’s Big Data 2.0

GridGain Systems has upgraded its namesake Java-based open source middleware platform for real-time Big Data processing. Unlike complex, decade-old SQL, ERP or Hadoop ETL systems that use dead data for batch offline processing, the new GridGain 4.0 will process live data so businesses can get meaningful results faster from low-latency real-time transactional and analytical processing. By comparison GridGain CEO Nikita Ivanov claims Hadoop is only good for long-term historical storage. GridGain is more like "Big Data 2.0." Anyway, the widgetry has added: Big Data Anywhere capabilities with native lightweight clients for Java, .NET, Python, PHP and C++ as well as native clients for the two largest mobility platforms, iOS and Android. Native language support for Java, Scala and Groovy programming languages. A Monitoring and Management Console for large-scale grid topo... (more)

An Introduction to Ant

Writing shell scripts to automate the build and deploy process for ColdFusion applications is not very much fun. The Jakarta Ant project is an open-source, cross-platform alternative that makes it easy to automate the build and deploy process. But My Build and Deploy Process is Fine.... Maybe your build and deploy process for your latest application is fine - you type a single command and your build process automatically retrieves your application from the source control system, configures the application appropriately for the target environment, and copies all the necessary files to the production servers while you head to the coffee shop for your morning cup of caffeine and the newspaper. But I know that the reality for the vast majority of projects I've seen (including many of my own applications!) are built and deployed using a written multistep checklist - some ... (more)

The Taming of the Queue

A few weeks back webserver request queueing came under heightened scrutiny as rapgenius blasted Heroku for not using as much autotune as promised in their “intelligent load balancing”. If you somehow missed the write-up (or response), check it out for its great simulations of load balancing strategies on Heroku. What if you’re not running on Heroku? Well, the same wisdom still applies – know your application’s load balancing and concurrency and measure its performance. Let’s explore how request queueing affects applications in the non-PaaS world and what you can do about it. Full-stack apps have full-stack problems Rapgenius had been monitoring server-side request latency as only the time the request spent being processed in the app layer – leading to large discrepancies between what their APM tools were reporting and what the actual user experience was. The missing... (more)

ChatOps: Let’s Talk Plugins By @PagerDuty | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

ChatOps: Let’s Talk Plugins By Eric Sigler This is the second post in our series on ChatOps In our last post, you learned what ChatOps is, how it works and the ways in which it can transform your organization. By promoting collaboration, communication and rapid learning, ChatOps presents some serious benefits not only for engineers, but also non-technical teams too. We want to take that a bit farther with our next two posts. Once you've chosen a framework and kicked the tires a bit, you'll probably want to add features to your bot. The plugins detailed below can be easily added and will help out with previously manual tasks you may have had to do daily. At PagerDuty, we use Ruby-based Lita and our chat bot, Officer URL, with a variety of plugins, so those are the examples we'll roll with below.  But, many of these plugins have alternatives in other frameworks so you ... Why Do 'Cool Kids' Choose Ruby or PHP to Build Websites Instead of Java?

Coach Wei's Blog Here is a question that I have been pondering on and off for quite a while: Why do "cool kids" choose Ruby or PHP to build websites instead of Java? I have to admit that I do not have an answer. Why do I even care? Because I am a Java developer. Like many Java developers, I get along with Java well. Not only the language itself, but the development environments (Eclipse for example), step-by-step debugging helper, wide availability of libraries and code snippets, and the readily accessible information on almost any technical question I may have on Java via Google. Last but not least, I go to JavaOne and see 10,000 people that talk and walk just like me. The other reason that I ponder this question is that  the power of Java is a perfect fit for the areas where websites may need more than markups or scripting, such as middleware logic. PHP and Ruby etc ... (more)

The explosion of new web/cloud/IoT-based applications and the data they generate are transforming our world right before our eyes. In this rush to adopt these new technologies, organizations are often ignoring fundamental questions concerning who owns the data and failing to ask for permission to conduct invasive surveillance of their customers. Organizations that are not transparent about how their systems gather data telemetry without offering shared data ownership risk product rejection, regu...

In his session at @ThingsExpo, Ben Klang, Founder & President of Mojo Lingo, discussed the impact of technology on identity. Sho...

WebRTC is about the data channel as much as about video and audio conferencing. However, basically all commercial WebRTC applications have been built with a focus on audio and video. The handling of “data” has been limited to text chat and file download – all other data sharing seems to end with screensharing. What is holding back a more intensive use of peer-to-peer data? In her session at @ThingsExpo, Dr Silvia Pfeiffer, WebRTC Applications Team Lead at National ICT Australia, looked at differ...
